• Nobles of Null is a forum based roleplay site where sci-fi and magic collide. Here, Earth remains fractured and divided despite humanity reaching out to the stars. Worse still, the trans-human slaves of one major power have escaped, only to establish their own Empire, seething with resentment at abuses of the past. Even the discovery of aliens, though medieval in development, has failed to rally these squabbling children of Earth together with its far darker implications. Worse still, is the discovery of the impossible - magic. Practiced by the alien locals, nearly depleted and therefore rare, its reality warping abilities remains abstract and distant to the general populace. All the while, unseen in the darkness of space, forces from without threaten to press in. For those with eyes opened by insight, it is clear that an era is about to end, and that a new age will dawn.

History

The S16 has its routes in the continued starship development line that began with the S1, and the need for a replacement to the Statesmen as the Magnetic Assembly asserted itself and its independence. Originally the S10 class was intended to serve in that role, but integrating a capable SuperLuminal Engine was not something that could be handled during the initial rapid design cycle of the ship. Instead, its follow up ship the S16 was built with the SLE system in mind, having enough space reserved to install an additional 2 reactors, and the necessarily catonite systems throughout the hull of the ship to properly sustain Superluminal travel.

The first ship of this type would be finished on Jan 1st, 2024, with its comissioning scheduled to happen at the same time as the New Years Revolution's anniversary. It would immediately be sent to Atlantica, to join the Provisional Fleet's forces there in the face of a growing international peacekeeping force that was assembled at the end of last year's Neptunian Summit.

Despite the supposed cooling of tensions, the Assembly continued to build these warships, fully intending to be able to expand into Atlantica as well as exert itself in remote star systems away from Hawking.

Ships of Note

Layout

The S16 uses a conventional stack layout.

Much like its predecessor, the bottom is the ship's engine and reactor assembly. Stacked on top of that are the fuel/reaction mass tanks. The central mass of the ship is stacked on top of this section and houses the ship's crew module, surrounded by launch bays, container storage, weapon systems, and additional living space modules that will experience the most gravity when the ship is under spin. Above that is another stack of reaction mass tanks, and the ship's laser-catch armor section.

The armor of the ship is heaviest at the front. The laser-catch protects the main stack of the ship, and is designed to dissipate laser strikes by absorbing increasingly more of a laser as it passes through the increasingly opaque materials. The shaping and mass of this section also provides considerable protection against fast moving impacts, radiation, and other threats.

one side of the ship is covered in heat resistant carbon-areogel that is optimized to stop laser strikes. This relatively light weight armor is intended mostly to protect against enemy long range laser weapons being used at long range where the S16 is intended to be operating during combat. The remaining sides of the ship are covered in radiator panels that provide some protection against radiation and small impacts, but are generally not rated to survive weapons fire.

Various thrusters are also positioned around the internal sections of the ship.

Armor

The armor package for the ship largely follows the same lightly armored, highly redundant/distributed design of other Assembly warships. Individual components are armored against radiation and micro-meteor strikes.

The entire length of the ship facing to one side is covered with armored blocks over the superstructure, with double layered bricks covering the upper crew compartment. These bricks are made from an amorphous carbon material that provides protection against energy weapons. These bricks are covered in a thin layer of ultra hard ceramics that provide protection against smaller fast-moving objects. This provides protection against lasers, smaller projectiles, and fragmentation weapons from one facing. The armor is less effective against larger projectiles or missiles.

When damaged, the bricks can be swapped out or moved around on the hull by repair crews to keep fresh armor covering the important areas of the ship even after long duration missions.

A three layer ceramic Whipple shield is installed on the top of the craft, and covers the primary crew sections but not the exterior modules or radiators.

Weapons

The primary weapon system of the S12 are two MAWS-64 Cold Laser Coupled Particle Beam systems, each with two projectors. Though basically the same as the static side-facing projectors of the S10, the new turreted projectors provide much greater coverage, an increase in redundancy, and no longer create a problematic armor-gap in the side facing anti-laser protection. These continue to be the longest range energy weapons available to the Assembly, and the core strategy behind their inclusion is that the ship should be able to deal with threats before they get close enough to cut through its armor.

Many of the coil gun systems that were present on the S10 were removed, and only five of the short range defense turrets are kept. This provides coverage against small threats like micrometers or against space-suited individuals while in port.

To round out the ship's armaments' is ample space for containerized anti-ship missiles, or additional equipment containers.

Life Support

The S16 uses the same crew module designed for the Edward Deming. This is supplemented by two additional crew modules that can rotate outward when the ship is spinning to create artificial gravity. Each of the three modules contains their own life support systems, though work areas are entirely on the inside of the ship while living space is on the extendable modules.
