• Nobles of Null is a forum based roleplay site where sci-fi and magic collide. Here, Earth remains fractured and divided despite humanity reaching out to the stars. Worse still, the trans-human slaves of one major power have escaped, only to establish their own Empire, seething with resentment at abuses of the past. Even the discovery of aliens, though medieval in development, has failed to rally these squabbling children of Earth together with its far darker implications. Worse still, is the discovery of the impossible - magic. Practiced by the alien locals, nearly depleted and therefore rare, its reality warping abilities remains abstract and distant to the general populace. All the while, unseen in the darkness of space, forces from without threaten to press in. For those with eyes opened by insight, it is clear that an era is about to end, and that a new age will dawn.

Life Support

Just what do you put down under the Life Support section of the Starship Template? You basically have 3 options of increasing complexity. This article is a short overview, but if you want more check out the incredibly in depth article at Project RHO.

CELSS

This is the premium life support system, it can recycle food, water, and air indefinitely so long as it has power. In NASA speak this is called a Controlled Ecological Life Support System.

The drawbacks of this kind of system is the constant need for someone to keep an eye on it. The biological components of such a system like plants or bacteria need constant care and the space/weight requirements for this type of system are the largest of the three.

You will often see this type of system on ships that require long duration operations or that require a high standard of crew comfort.

ECLSS

This is the basic life support needed to get through the day. ECLSS or Environmental Control and Life Support System is only concerned with keeping the crew alive in the short term. Often this includes a pressurized ship interior and systems to keep the air clean with little else.

These systems are light weight in the short term, but require the ship resupply frequently to replace filters, restock on food, get rid of waste products and fill their fresh water tanks.

You will see this type of system on ships that operate near space colonies or that stay near Human civilization.

PLSS

A space suit. Instead of a ship having its own life support system, the crew wears a Personal Life Support System.

This is the most spartan and uncomfortable type of life support. While it may be suitable for military or emergency use, a Human is going to find themselves unable to tolerate such a system for extended periods of time.

You will see this life support system for emergency use, or on small military combat craft.
