Seven fair maidens clad in shining armor rode atop uni-horned steeds, their not-hooves beating into the ground at a frantic pace. Their dark skin beaded with unease, as they were unable to come straight to their lady's side. The furthest away, they circled in unison as their lances spat lightning and hurled bolts of energy at the next circle closer in. Only, this circle of seven, made of creatures birds and people all blended together, defiantly spat back, keeping the maidens at bay. Their remaining seven brethren formed the next circle, which quickly moved even closer across the meadow. And of course, right at the center was
Hoshiko and her merry
Daqinren.
"We do, Jun. But this is weirder," Hoshiko tried to soothe Jun. Having read several English works, the tiger tailed princess wondered if she was smack dab in the innermost circle of hell.
"No more orbital air bursts or orbital napalm strikes," Hoshiko declined.
"I'm not sure how strong these 'wards' are." In meatspace, she worriedly glanced at Lady Nimue as the woman wiped a bead of sweat off her brow, eyes staring focused on something far off they couldn't see. Xian however, moved fast. Having leaped over the phalanx of
Aos'Si guards at the Howdah's entrance, she made to charge at the nearest, most visible creature.
12'o clock!
Automatic fire rapidly roared from Xian's gun, but the rounds pierced through it like cloud-fluff, only for a duplicate of it blink into being slightly offset to the tigress's left as it kept closing in! Even so, the thing's own left arm was mangled by her shots. Launching her grenade, the rocket propelled round thumped out and into its chest like it was cloud fluff and exploded. In an instant, the image of the creature she was shooting vanished and another appeared, this time offset to Xian's right! Its entire right side had its feathers blasted off to reveal uncomfortably
human skin peppered with fragments, the arm nothing but bloody tatters.
The realization it had zigged to Xian's left, and then to her right behind an illusion quickly dawned, and now it was almost on top of her! Wen's burst of fire finally cut the thing down, the explosive rounds punching into flesh and exploding from the inside. Tumbling from its momentum, the thing awkwardly collapsed 'face' up, the majority of its head missing. But already, it was twitching as flesh began to wiggle and writhe, a marble sized crimson ruby glowing bright in its chest.
"Regeneration...it's the most sensible perk to get first, right?" Hoshiko mused in their 2000s' era cafe virtuality. Crassly grabbing a chocolate cake by hand, she took a bite out it like a barbarian to calm her nerves, if only a little bit. Having an ability that meant simply not dying was a huge boon, especially when evolution was all about not dying.
"I hope you don't feel bad about being extra augmented Reina, I'm sure you give the best hugs," she encouraged the snake-woman, her mouth half-full. The tiger princess pointed at a still frame of the badly damaged creature where its plumage was missing, right before Wen covered Xian with another burst of fire and put it down.
"Look here, it's smooth." Hoshiko began, mouth half full.
"The thing isn't just cut up and sewn together from a bunch of living things, is more like someone stuck them together like clay, or maybe kit bashed different sets before applying some polymer-print and paint."
The muscular, humanoid thigh transitioned to birdlike feet all too well.
Lady Nimue's golden gaze came back into focus and turned to Reina on hearing the serpent woman's question. "We have not reacquired this level of fleshcraft," she began. "I fear that they are servants of an Outer God. One who does not wish us to proceed to the convocation." Having said that, the distant roar of thermonuclear engines grew rapidly before the hissing crack of a pulse laser began hammering away at several of the creatures. Looking out of the opening in the howdah, Hoshiko could hear the ones on her six'o clock getting vaporized by the
gunship, but the remaining three nearest Xian and Wen continued charging recklessly towards the Howdah she was in.
"Oh hey, hello," Hoshiko flippantly greeted the newcomer.
"Del Valle right?" The princess had a guitar strum for effect. "We're not quite done yet and they're getting danger close." Almost for emphasis, the phalanx of four Aos'Si trying to cover the open side of the Howdah began opening fire with their spears as the creatures tried to rush past Xian and Wen!
