• Nobles of Null is a forum based roleplay site where sci-fi and magic collide. Here, Earth remains fractured and divided despite humanity reaching out to the stars. Worse still, the trans-human slaves of one major power have escaped, only to establish their own Empire, seething with resentment at abuses of the past. Even the discovery of aliens, though medieval in development, has failed to rally these squabbling children of Earth together with its far darker implications. Worse still, is the discovery of the impossible - magic. Practiced by the alien locals, nearly depleted and therefore rare, its reality warping abilities remains abstract and distant to the general populace. All the while, unseen in the darkness of space, forces from without threaten to press in. For those with eyes opened by insight, it is clear that an era is about to end, and that a new age will dawn.

Overview

Device: Magnetic Assembly Containerized System 11
Type: Containerized CELSS Life Support System
Operators: The Magnetic Assembly
Manufacturer: The Magnetic Assembly
Introduced: 2322

Length: 10 meters
Height: 2.5 meters
Width: 2 meters

History

Following the New Years Revolution the Magnetic Assembly was freed of its commitments to use technology and equipment from other suppliers in the American Union. This provided an opportunity to redesign some older equipment used throughout the Assembly. The CELSS Life Support Container used at the time was fairly basic, and required more manual maintenance than was preferably for the Assembly.

Heram Wazu would lead the redesign effort explicitly to update the systems used onboard The Edward Deming. The focus was placed on improving the longevity of the system, reducing maintenance, and increasing the variety of foods generated by the system.

Early in 2322 a design was finalized and containers were being produced at Rotislav for distribution throughout the Provisional Fleet. The first few systems were deployed to the Edward Deming, with others being used to gradually replace older systems throughout the fleet.

Layout

The container houses 10 hydroponic racks, each about 70 square feet taking up about half of the space inside of the container. The remaining space houses the equipment for monitoring the entire system automated harvesting, waste water recycling, and atmospheric circulation. There is a small passageway just large enough for a person to squeeze along the side of this system for maintenance and hookups for power, water, and atmosphere on both sides of the container.

Usage

The container is intended to have a self-contained and self-sustaining environment for long term life support. This reduces the need to carry extensive multi-year food supplies for a crew. The self-contained nature of the system also allows for the survival of a ship should disease break out in one of the containers, allowing for the failed biosphere to be destroyed and re-grown using material from other containers.

Carbohydrate Crops

The container is generally used to grow a mix of food for two people, with 65% of the space given over to 'Carboydrate' Crops that can be used to create starchy foods similar to breads.

  • Beets
  • Carrots
  • Green Peas
  • Parsnips
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Yams

Protein Crops

35% of the container is typically given over to Protein Crops designed to replace the much more energy intensive to create lab-grown meat products.

  • Watercress
  • Spinach
  • Chinese cabbage
  • Asparagus
  • Mustard Greens
  • Broccoli
  • Collard greens
  • Brussels Sprouts

Fruit Crops

Fruits can also be grown inside of the container, and a wide range of genetically engineered vine-like plants can be used to produce fruits without the need for trees. Often fruits are grown in place of Protein crops, with Protein being provided by stored meat-products.
