• Nobles of Null is a forum based roleplay site where sci-fi and magic collide. Here, Earth remains fractured and divided despite humanity reaching out to the stars. Worse still, the trans-human slaves of one major power have escaped, only to establish their own Empire, seething with resentment at abuses of the past. Even the discovery of aliens, though medieval in development, has failed to rally these squabbling children of Earth together with its far darker implications. Worse still, is the discovery of the impossible - magic. Practiced by the alien locals, nearly depleted and therefore rare, its reality warping abilities remains abstract and distant to the general populace. All the while, unseen in the darkness of space, forces from without threaten to press in. For those with eyes opened by insight, it is clear that an era is about to end, and that a new age will dawn.

History

The UG-311 was designed late in 2301 by a collaboration between the Magnetic Assembly, Stellar Defense, and Atlantica Electromotive with the goal of updating the primary weapon systems of the American Union’s Statesmen class warships. The Magnetic Assembly would provide the latest in materials and space-hardened electronics developed from their existing systems. Stellar Defense would provide the railgun and power systems from pre-existing weapon programs and Atlantica Electromotive would provide many of the mechanical and motor systems for the design taken from their existing space-based infrastructure programs. This would result in a design made up from already well tested components.

By 2310, the weapon system was in place throughout the American Union and sales were opened up to PMC groups. The sheer amount of space parts available for the system make it an attractive option for many of the smaller military forces.

Layout

The UG-311 has an armored upper turret, and an unarmored lower section that is supposed to sit inside of a ship’s hull.

The upper section mounts two 100mm railguns in independently raising mounts, as well as a pair of thermal-electro-optical sensors for target acquisition. These sensors are generally only for last-moment corrections, as the target is expected to be detected and queue’d up by the ship for the weapons to fire at. The two rails of each cannon are braced by a transparent composite material that allows for easy inspection of the rails and that distinct ‘dual-rail’ cannon look.

The lower section of the turret contains the electronics for managing the weapon, capacitors that are designed to be fed by the connected ship’s power systems, and the ammunition magazine for the weapon system itself.

Ammunition

Ammo Capacity: 2,400 rounds in magazine

The Railgun fires a variety of 100mm slugs. Though these are typically unguided specially coated tungsten rounds, there are a range of other rounds available such as bursting rounds and railgun launched guided missiles. The reasonably high fire rate and high velocity of the projectile generally makes such specialty ammunition unnecessary.
