MAWS-92 100mm Anti-Starship Coilgun
Magnetic Assembly Weapon System Number 92 ( MAWS-92 ) is a 100mm coilgun that represents the Magnetic Assembly's own offshoot of the electromagnetic cannons used by the American Union.
History
The weapon system itself was developed to replace the existing supply of UG-311 turrets from pre 2320 as an anti-starship weapon that could engage targets that were already close enough to the ship to make projectile weapons preferable over lasers and other directed energy systems. The Assembly's weapon requirements were dramatically different from the American Union, as they needed to field units that could operate at extreme distances from their production centers for extended periods of time. They lacked the massive supply networks that the Union used to replace worn rails for conventional railguns, which led them to consider using a coilgun instead. The Magnetic Assembly did have an excess of design and production expertise that allowed them to more easily produce high end coilguns. The Assembly also had an excess of parts for 100mm railgun rounds, so these were adapted for use in a coilgun projectile which is why the weapon system was standardized at 100mm. These systems were paired with fairly conventional radar targeting systems to produce the MAWS-92.
The weapon system would start being produced in 2322 as part of the New Modular Ship Program with the intention of being fitted to the S10 series expeditionary warship.
Layout
The MAWS-92 has a fairly conventional turret layout with electrical systems housed in an armored turret with an opening in the front for the coilgun. A targeting radar is attached to the top of the turret and an opening in the bottom of the turret allows the system to be connected to a mounting that can provide power, cooling, and additional ammunition.
Usage
The coilgun is a very basic weapon by the Magnetic Assembly's standards. It fires a relatively fast moving projectile that makes it suitable for shorter range ship fights. The weapon is not really intended to be used in a head to head fight against other similarly sized starships as Assembly ships traditionally don't carry heavy enough armor or enough guns to survive such fights.
Instead the coilgun is intended to be used for protection of the ship against smaller craft in highly trafficed space such as shuttles or small attack craft that may operate near docks or other shared facilities.
