• Nobles of Null is a forum based roleplay site where sci-fi and magic collide. Here, Earth remains fractured and divided despite humanity reaching out to the stars. Worse still, the trans-human slaves of one major power have escaped, only to establish their own Empire, seething with resentment at abuses of the past. Even the discovery of aliens, though medieval in development, has failed to rally these squabbling children of Earth together with its far darker implications. Worse still, is the discovery of the impossible - magic. Practiced by the alien locals, nearly depleted and therefore rare, its reality warping abilities remains abstract and distant to the general populace. All the while, unseen in the darkness of space, forces from without threaten to press in. For those with eyes opened by insight, it is clear that an era is about to end, and that a new age will dawn.

"Sooner or later the world's going to drag us into its ugliest affairs, whether we like it or not, and I'd rather have the Lancers learn to do what's necessary to survive..." -- Ulrike Grau, ex-commander of unspecified GDW ship

The Grau Lancers is a general military plot that follows a small, relatively independent group of the GDW space command. Beginning as an anti-piracy and counter terrorism operation, the Grau Lancers now find themselves embroiled in international politics. They must maintain the peace on behalf of the GDW as they root out sabotage and misinformation attempts through whatever methods necessary.

Game Master Characters include Ulrike and Eberhard Grau, played by Ray of Meep. Player characters include:

Plot Style and Expectations

Game Master posts are scheduled on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Players are allowed to create their independent joint-posts to better develop their characters, and post as many times as they want in the main chapters.

Violence will be the bread-and-butter of this campaign. Sex and language will be part of the experience as well, but will tagged with they are explicitly described.

The Grau Lancers

Eberhard Grau and Ulrike Grau are a married couple that served aboard a Baudry class frigate that formed the armored core of a merchant fleet. After several run-ins with pirates and terrorists, the pair sought to form a semi-independent military group that was capable of operating outside the law and dealt with perceived wrong-doers in more direct ways. Thus, with the blessings of several members of the GDW council, the Grau Lancers were formed.

For now, the Grau Lancers is a small group, with the Grau twins mostly running management and ship maintenance. Connections in Council help secure funds and mission assignments. The Grau Lancers recruit through a mix of methods, from private connections to targeted, online advertising. Afterwards, interviews and background checks are conducted, which include in person combat demonstrations.

Suggested Character Origins

While the plot will feature space ship-to-ship combat, it will primarily focused on personal, hand-to-hand combat. Thus, it is highly recommended for your characters to have general short-range combat skills. Specialization for specific tasks is also encouraged, but don't place too much emphasis on it or else risk your character becoming situational. Some knowledge of ship systems is also recommended, in the event that extensive ship-to-ship combat occurs.

The GDW at this point in time is all human with a majority being European and Middle East descent, and the Grau Lancers primarily recruits from the nation, specifically the superstate's military.

The Story So Far

The Grau couple recruited three ex-military personnel to work as the Lancers, who've spent the last year or so travelling through the GDW-colonized Silbern system, preventing piracy, raiding pirate vessels, and both rescuing hostages and capturing suspects alike, gradually discovering the presence of an illegal arms trafficking ring. In the process however, the Grau Lancers angered powers unknown, resulting in political fallout that has them now working menial security jobs. Complicating matters is familial history now catching up to one of the members, embroiling the Lancers in a conflict that may have consequences beyond internal conflict.

A boiling point was reached when a large illegal arms factory was discovered on the Farbon asteroid, headed by the lawyer who also exacerbated the familial conflict. After a length battle of casualties, the facility was eventually destroyed, putting a sizable dent into trafficking's operations.

The victory was short lived, however, as news reached that the Hawking system announced independence from the AU, sending chaotic ripples through the entire human community. The Grau Lancers were sent back to Earth to help quell unrest in the wake of this instability.
