• Nobles of Null is a forum based roleplay site where sci-fi and magic collide. Here, Earth remains fractured and divided despite humanity reaching out to the stars. Worse still, the trans-human slaves of one major power have escaped, only to establish their own Empire, seething with resentment at abuses of the past. Even the discovery of aliens, though medieval in development, has failed to rally these squabbling children of Earth together with its far darker implications. Worse still, is the discovery of the impossible - magic. Practiced by the alien locals, nearly depleted and therefore rare, its reality warping abilities remains abstract and distant to the general populace. All the while, unseen in the darkness of space, forces from without threaten to press in. Discovered both by the explorer/scientist Leon Wof in Reservoir, and separately by Jacob Negran in the American Union. This electro-gravity material revolutionized the modern Reservoir FTL construction industry.

Use of this material in the construction of FTL drives makes the Safe FTL magic happen in Kingdom of Vice and Virtue starships. Similarly the material is used in construction of SLE arrays, artificial gravity systems, and the miniaturized starship mounted SLE systems.

During the geopolitical struggles of the late 21st century and the 22nd century between the American Union and the Pan-Asian Combine, the PAC refused to accept the name of the substance, settling on the culturally independent name, "Catonite". Named after the common feline, the name for the material harkens to its physically whimsical and black-box nature, along with its potentially destructive properties.
