History
The UG-301 was designed early in the year 2271 and has seen continuous, incremental, improvement. By 2310 this incremental development was largely moved from Stellar Defense to The Magnetic Assembly as they took the lead in developing superior sensor equipment and materials science to increase reliability and reduce the weight of the weapon system.
By 2320 the technology in the UG-301 could be considered highly mature. Manufacturing and maintenance for the weapon system could be conducted throughout American Union space. Nearly every Union starship carries some variant of the UG-301 and export versions of the weapon were made available to PMCs, other nations, and private citizens.

Layout
Length: 5.5 Meters
Height: 7 Meters
The UG-301 is a self-contained weapon system housing its own power capacitors, miniature reactors, computing equipment, sensors, recoil absorption, Heat sinks, and ammunition supply, requiring only a sturdy connection to a ship’s hull in order to be fitted. The majority of the hardware for the weapon system is contained in the cylinder below the weapon itself. The upper section contains a rotating turret that can rotate 360 degrees as well as pitch upward 90 degrees. The turret houses the ammunition storage in a rack above and behind the turret, along with the forward facing coil-gun and its capacitors. The upper section also contains the fire control sensors made up of two thermal-electro-optical sensors mounted on either side of the weapon and a single fire-control radar.
Ammunition
Ammo Capacity: 15,104
The Coilgun can fire a variety of 2.5mm metal ball bearings. There are a large number of different ammunition types that can be found on the open market ranging from ‘High Performance’ wiffle-ball type rounds that minimize mass to complex micro-explosive rounds but so long as the metal spheres used can be loaded by the magnetic feed-system the projectile can be fired out of the weapon.
The majority of users of the weapon system load it with simple steel ball bearings. For close in defense against soft targets there is usually no need for anything fancy.
The drum of the UG-301 can house 15,104 rounds. To refill the ammo the drum needs to be replaced with a fresh drum, usually through a spacewalk.
