• Nobles of Null is a forum based roleplay site where sci-fi and magic collide. Here, Earth remains fractured and divided despite humanity reaching out to the stars. Worse still, the trans-human slaves of one major power have escaped, only to establish their own Empire, seething with resentment at abuses of the past. Even the discovery of aliens, though medieval in development, has failed to rally these squabbling children of Earth together with its far darker implications. Worse still, is the discovery of the impossible - magic. Practiced by the alien locals, nearly depleted and therefore rare, its reality warping abilities remains abstract and distant to the general populace. All the while, unseen in the darkness of space, forces from without threaten to press in. For those with eyes opened by insight, it is clear that an era is about to end, and that a new age will dawn.

UG-18

Shotguns have been a common weapon for hundreds of years because of their ease of use and versatility. The UG-18 is a modernized version of the shotgun with a bullpup design and some modern features. Its primary use is to act as a launcher for a variety of specialized shells, and often has more in common with a grenade launcher or handheld cannon than shotguns of old.

Overview

Weapon: UG-18
Type: Shotgun
Operators: The Magnetic Assembly
Manufacturer: The Magnetic Assembly

Length: 36.8 centimeters
Weight: 7 lbs

Ammunition: 4 Gauge Shotgun Rounds
Capacity: 6 rounds

History

Originally the MAG-18, the shotgun was designed in 2017 as a design study for how to better arrange a bullpup style firing mechanism for a firearm. The lessons learned from the design would be folded into the UG-12 bullpup variants produced in 2318 while the MAG-18 shotgun would end up having some basic features added to it for usability and then produced in small batches to get feedback on the weapon system along with real-world usability data.

In 2318 the Magnetic Assembly’s MAG-18 shotgun design was submitted for official adoption by the American Union for use in special circumstances. The weapon would receive the new designation UG-18 and would eventually be accepted then distributed to several units for door breaching and for firing large frangible rounds for security usage inside of starships. The large size of the rounds would make the shotgun popular for use with units that would come up against difficult to bring down creatures or armored targets.

The weapon system is a bullpup design with the ammunition held in the rear of the weapon and the pistol grip located towards the center. The barrel for the weapon is mostly free-floating, with the rail systems located below the main barrel, and canted on either side along the top. There is an ambidextrous fire select and charging handle directly above the grip and trigger assembly. There are also inbuilt iron sights along the top of the gun. The shotgun shells eject to the right side normally but parts can be changed out to eject left for left handed shooters.

Usage

The UG-18 is a relatively heavy shotgun with relatively minimal recoil absorption. This makes it better suited for use by soldiers using powered armor or with cybernetic strength enhancement. The intended use is for having a single soldier among a group using the weapon, carrying a variety of special purpose rounds for breaching doors, subduing targets, or generally expanding the capabilities of the squad.

Ammunition

The UG-18 fires massive 4 gauge shotgun shells in a variety of configurations. Typically these larger shell sizes are used to fire larger payloads at low speed which are more suitable for less-lethal options.

Shells

4 Gauge Breaching Round

A 4 gauge shotgun projectile that is full of a silver-dust suspended in a waxy material that is designed to hit a target and quickly break up so as not to damage anything behind its target.

4 Gauge Buckshot

A traditional buckshot, consisting of several ball bearings.

4 Gauge Frangible Slug

These rounds consist of a slug made of a compressed ceramic powder that breaks up upon impact. Very similar to breaching rounds, teh Frangible slug is designed to injure a target without over-penetration and causing further damage.

4 Gauge SABOT

Designed for anti-armor usage. The 4 Gauge Sabot fires a tungsten penetrator designed to pierce through armor.

4 Gauge Stun Round

Built with a power source, inbuilt computer, and impact prongs, the 4 Gauge Stun Round is designed to impact a target, use an electrical charge to stun them, and will automatically re-apply the stunning charge if it feel the target is continuing to move around.
