• Nobles of Null is a forum based roleplay site where sci-fi and magic collide. Here, Earth remains fractured and divided despite humanity reaching out to the stars. Worse still, the trans-human slaves of one major power have escaped, only to establish their own Empire, seething with resentment at abuses of the past. Even the discovery of aliens, though medieval in development, has failed to rally these squabbling children of Earth together with its far darker implications. Worse still, is the discovery of the impossible - magic. Practiced by the alien locals, nearly depleted and therefore rare, its reality warping abilities remains abstract and distant to the general populace. All the while, unseen in the darkness of space, forces from without threaten to press in. For those with eyes opened by insight, it is clear that an era is about to end, and that a new age will dawn.

Colonization of Venus

We've had plenty of time in setting for this to get started. How do we want to handle it?

I kinda like the idea of using solar power satellites to generate some revenue to get going while doubling as a sun-shade to start cooling Venus as a carbon removal strategy.

Others want Cloud Cities.

Certainly there could be a major disagreement between groups that want to keep their cloud cities and the groups trying to freeze Venus.

I guess it's a question of what we want to be providing RP wise with Venus. I like the idea of showing that there's progress being done, but still having the uniqueness of cloud cities. So, I guess I'd suggest that we're at the point where CO2 is starting to rain down onto the surface, but we still have the cloud cities around.

On one hand, I think its fun to flesh stuff out.

On the other hand, I don't want to flesh something out that someone else (with different ideas) might want to use for RP later.

Maybe its time to just start an online for Venus on the wiki and pencil in a few of the basics?

Even in that video complete terraforming will take hundreds, if not thousands, of years. However, we do have Mars established as already being a cold tundra with a blue sky already.

Right now, Venus' surface pressure is around 92 bar, while its surface temperature is 748 K. As shown in the graph, at Venus' current pressure, the temperature would have to be lowered to 250 K, or 23 degrees below water's typical freezing point. So it'd certainly take a lot of time to cool Venus, or find alternative terraforming methods.

Humanity being humanity, I say we go with the project being splintered in multiple directions. Some people are happy building cloud cities, some are looking at massive carbon sequestration projects using tech that saved Earth from complete environmental collapse, some are using the orbital mirrors to cool Venus down. Ultimately, these projects are allowed to go through because it'd take generations before their effects cause any serious effect on the planet.

I agree with the multiple approaches at once. It's most useful to us out-of-character, as having a many headed hydra that can't make up its mind on where to go opens up a lot of roleplay opportunity. The interactions between the different groups alone would be interesting to say the least, if not hostile behind closed doors.
