• Nobles of Null is a forum based roleplay site where sci-fi and magic collide. Here, Earth remains fractured and divided despite humanity reaching out to the stars. Worse still, the trans-human slaves of one major power have escaped, only to establish their own Empire, seething with resentment at abuses of the past. Even the discovery of aliens, though medieval in development, has failed to rally these squabbling children of Earth together with its far darker implications. Worse still, is the discovery of the impossible - magic. Practiced by the alien locals, nearly depleted and therefore rare, its reality warping abilities remains abstract and distant to the general populace. All the while, unseen in the darkness of space, forces from without threaten to press in. For those with eyes opened by insight, it is clear that an era is about to end, and that a new age will dawn.

hyperrealism

Hyperrealism

A growing trend among the extremely wealthy of the American Union, Hyperrealism is a style resembling high-resolution photographs applied to real objects.

Body Modification

Typically this style is seen in the extremely high end gene mods and cybernetics purchased by the wealthiest members of the American Union. While these modifications aim to enhance the human body, they do not seek to abandon the human form like like Daqin or Magnetic Assembly do. Instead the goal is to create a human body that looks hyperrealistic as if it was being viewed in a high resolution photograph, or to create a human body that is more human than human, often with the proportions of a greek god, or other 'super heroic' body shapes. These bodies are instantly recognizable as human, but are far more idealized than what would normally be considered peak human.
Generally Body Mods and cybernetics fall under a legal system that takes heavily from North American court cases. The case Diamond V. Chakrabarty in 1980 set the precedent that altered life can be patented. This case would be frequently cited in court cases related to human genetics, with many corporations attempting to patent the Human Genome. The 2013 case the Association for Molecular Pathology v Myriad Genetics Inc. established that Human Genes cannot be patented as they were a product of nature, which would chill legal actions relating to the Human Genome until the 2100s. By this point legal protections relating to GMOs had been extended to the children of GMOs due to the uncontrollable nature of cross-pollination between agricultural GMOs however extensive and binding contracts could be put in place for the users and breeders of GMOs.

These precedents would be used by the wealthiest families to control the expensive gene-mods that they paid for, which entered their family lines. Attempting to steal the genetic code by unlicensed breeding could be met with extraordinarily harsh penalties, creating families that were increasingly controlled by the heads of the household and that were increasingly separated from 'the people' to the point where even marrying into a wealthy family could be prevented without the approval of the owners of the genetic IP. Similarly a license to use the genetics could be entirely revoked, effectively expelling someone from their own bloodline in a very literal sense.

The licensing and usage of Artificially Created Human Genes (ACHGs) is a legal battlefield still within the American Union, especially as these mods become increasingly needed for healthcare and quality of life reasons.

Economic inequality

Hyperrealism is very tightly linked with Economic Inequality in the American Union. The hyperrealist body modifications are often explicitly made with the intent of being so expensive as to be out of reach of the common person and to indicate that the owner of said mods is someone to be reckoned with. While these mods sometimes do have utilitarian functionality such as increased muscle mass or optimized leg length, they are just as often entirely 'for show' and include features like skin that is optimized for presentation.
