The Cognition Membrane is the collective name for the thirty six artificial intelligences that currently form the backbone of the Magnetic Assembly’s governing body. Sometimes referred to as ‘Cells’, each AI is absorbed from the outside, or fabricated wholly by the others for specific task. Generally they all have the unified goal of continued human prosperity, as well as the basic gathering of data.
Some Cells have a great deal of contact with humans due to their intended function, whilst others can operate for many years or even decades unnoticed.
Hardware
The Membrane exists all throughout the MA infrastructure, using the combined processing power of all the largest facilities, sometimes right down to allocated memory within individual organic cyborgs, with no single core facility. Though this might make it seem vulnerable to a virus, the sheer clout and processing speed that can be brought to bear by a network this size means that it is capable of incredible feats of counter-hacking and subterfuge by itself.
With a source code that is constantly self-modifying and changing, cutting off obsolete portions and optimising others, much of its processes are undecipherable even to the Magnetic Assembly themselves.
All of these factors, of course, make spacefaring vessels belonging to the faction incredibly hard to hack, too.
Communion With Organics
Though there have been periods in history where the Membrane had absolute rule over all functions of government, it met with the accession of the Machine Exemplar favourably, letting them veto it’s own decisions if 75% of them ever agreed that the course of action would result in an unacceptable loss of human life.
Some sub-factions also support the idea of having devices implanted which report directly back to the Cognition Membrane at all times, especially disciples of the more religious and occult parts of the Magnetic Assembly's cultural organisation. This process is not uniform, however, and is hotly contested by the DFE.

Known Cells
- Embryo; Formerly a specific AI computer that controlled a city with this name on Yelton Veda, this Cell is highly vocal and actively involved in the lives of organic members of the MA, constantly offering advice and direction to those involved in the more religious sub-assemblies. It is said to be one of the very first to acknowledge the existence of the Machine Exemplar.
