• Nobles of Null is a forum based roleplay site where sci-fi and magic collide. Here, Earth remains fractured and divided despite humanity reaching out to the stars. Worse still, the trans-human slaves of one major power have escaped, only to establish their own Empire, seething with resentment at abuses of the past. Even the discovery of aliens, though medieval in development, has failed to rally these squabbling children of Earth together with its far darker implications. Worse still, is the discovery of the impossible - magic. Practiced by the alien locals, nearly depleted and therefore rare, its reality warping abilities remains abstract and distant to the general populace. All the while, unseen in the darkness of space, forces from without threaten to press in. For those with eyes opened by insight, it is clear that an era is about to end, and that a new age will dawn.

DaQin Research Facility

TianTang

A klaxon blared around the team, red emergency lighted flashing as the facility they were in started going into lockdown. Things had been going so perfectly. No one suspected the team in their security uniforms, and with the rest of the security team currently fending off the herd of Siortalun that Cleo had been herding and baiting to this very research facility. Everything had gone over smoothly, the security forces in the facility were practically tripping over each other to defend the gates, and Cleo had, on multiple occasions, gleefully commented on how many DaQin guards had been eaten by the local monsters.

It wasn't until one of the scientists started asking them questions. They would have been fine if the scientist had been asking questions about the Siortalun, but they were asking questions they didn't have the information for, and sadly the DaQin were a little hard to get through with raw charisma alone. Taking him out quietly would have been easy if it hadn't been for the fact there were several people in the hallway. Long story short, a scientist locked the facility down, everyone was running away, and Cleo was on the radio.

"What did you do!" She yelled, the team could almost hear how she threw her arms up in the air in frustration. "That alarm is sending an emergency alert to the Imperial Forces, and I can't take on that kind of fire power! Please for the love of christ, tell me you have the information I told you to get! Have you gotten to the main computer?"

The Main Computer. The DaQin were doing some kind of research in this facility, and Cleo had made it their job to steal that research and, success or failure, blow up the facility. It was almost cartoonish how cliche the mission was. Almost as if some writer had tried to throw it together to give the protagonists something to do, but that was life. Not every adventure started off unique. Unfortunately, they had not been able to get there before the alarm sounded, and with the facility locking down, they may not even be able to make it, as blast doors started closing down all the main pathways in an equally movie scene style. The DaQin were always all about that flair!

"Hurry up with that hack!" Hilda shouted over her shoulder. Dressed up as another Daqinese lab technician, she pulled out her weapon and did her best to protect the team. They didn't have much given the undercover nature of this op, but with handgun in her grasp, she stared down the sights, anticipating the moment a Daqinese soldier would round the corner. "This is supposed to be a smash and grab, but at this rate we're going to get caught," she reminded them all. "I'm not going to let that happen though!" the blond resolutely added. "If worse comes to worse, I'll act as rear guard," the Tiger Type solemnly continued. "It doesn't matter if I'm captured and utterly used by their insidious machines - I'll make sure to buy you all enough time to get away, so don't worry about me!"

"Cyka blyat, I'm trying!" Tatiana hissed through clenched teeth. She stood in a DaQin server room with a thin wire running from her computer to a server bank tapping away at her tablet. Whereas Hilda wore a lab tech outfit, she wore a computer technician disguise. She rolled her eyes at Hilda, muttering incoherently in her native tongue. Somehow she had missed a hidden alarm in their code and now all hell was breaking loose. "Triggered sneaky alarm. Soon we have data, do not worry, da?"

“Let’s worry about getting out of here before taking any last stands,” Joshua said, his back to a wall as he looked down side corridors. His shiny new cybernetic eyes whirred as they focused down the long passages, scanning for hostiles. Thankfully, his security uniform let him carry a little more firepower than Hilda, specifically a Daqin gyro rocket rifle. Wish I could have brought something I was used to, he thought, but alarms would have really gone off if I brought something human designed. “How exactly were we supposed to blow up this place again?" he asked, prosthetic tail swishing back and forth in annoyance. "It’s not like we could have brought any significant explosives in here.”

John scurries to take cover surprised by the firefight. "Let's hope there is no last stand I like being alive. " scrounging through his janitorial cart taking inventory of what was sneaked in
"I feel useless here, how much longer till I can do my job!" He yells.

As the doors closed, Hilda, Joshua, and John took up defensive positions while Tatiana knelt down at one of the control panels, plugging herself into the wall. John scrambled through the cart he was pushing along, looking around. "Let's hope there ain't no last stand," He muttered, looking deeper through the various smuggled explosives he had on him. "I kinda like being alive."

"Let's worry about getting out of here before we take any last stands," Joshua ordered, awkwardly holding up the Daqin assault rifle. "So, how are we supposed blow this building up again?" He asked, looking at John. "I mean, we didn't really have a convenient way to smuggle explosives in here," He asked, staying in control of the situation, at east in his mind. Get out of this hall, find computer, steal data, plant bombs and leave. Still a very easy job.

"I've got enough explosives to level this whole facility," John reassured, kneeling down below the cart. "But I'm useless here. How long till we get to the computer room, and I can do my job?" He asked, looking at Tatiana, who ignored him.

"Hurry up with that hack!" Hilda piped in, almost scolding Tatiana, as she covered opposite of Joshua with her pistol

"Cyka Blyat!" The Snow Elf snapped, trying to stay focused on her pad. "Can you not see that I am trying!" She asked, shaking her head in annoyance. "Glupyye inostrantsy, vsegda so, delayut eto seychas, delayut eto seychas," She continued to mutter to herself.

Hilda huffed, looking around. "This is supposed to be a smash and grab!" She whined, her own frustration showing a little. "In and out, but at this rate we're going to be caught!"

"Oh here we go," Joshua groaned.

"But don't worry!" Hilda continued, standing upbrave and tall, pushing her chest out proudly. "I won't let that happen! Worst comes to worst, I will act as rear guard to let you all escape!" The Tiger said with determination.

"Kto-to skazhet koshach'yey shlyukhe zatknut'sya," Tatiana quickly groaned.

"It doesn't matter if I am captured!" Hilda continued without missing a beat, holding up a fist and looking off into the distance as she carried on her monologue. "They will violate me with their vile machines, use me however they wish! But, it will all be worth it if one of you escape! I'll buy all the time I can with my flesh, but I can take it! Don't you worry about me!"

Joshua face palmed. "Again!" He said, keeping an eye on his door. "Let's get out of here before we start talking about that bullshit!"

"What is wrong with that lady..." John asked, looking at Joshua.

"Not a good time John," Joshua said.

As he did, the doors engaged and started to open again, Tatiana quickly putting her gear away. "As previously implied. I would get doors open," She said.

The doors opened, and the hallway immediately in front of them was mostly clear, doors as far as they could see opening up. Tatiana had done a good job. Nothing would likely get in their way for at least a few minutes. The halls remained clear, even as they moved through the halls, reaching the main computer room, who's guard was uneventfully dispatched as everyone got to work.

Things were going well, until a pitched, animalistic scream sounded through the base. Cleo came over the radio. "Someone let the Siortalun into the base... Any ideas what you guys will do?"

"What the hell was that noise! I have never heard anything like that" He trembles at the noise and looks puzzled at Cleo's call. "A Siortalun what is it and how do we make sure it doesn't kill us."

Getting into the main computer room as quickly as he can John looks around to find anything of value. "maybe there is a layout of the facility you know like and emergency exit or secret tunnels!"

as he looks around he begins to place charges. "I don't know about y'all but we better have a good escape plan... I brought the timer detonator... Damn it i was supposed to bring the remote activated detonator. I apologize..."

Tatiana rushed to the main computer and pulled out her kit. "Amerikantsy govoryat, chto my sumasshedshiye. Vozmozhno, oni pravy, ya, dolzhno byt', soshel s uma, chtoby prinyat' etu rabotu." She muttered under her breath while she plugged herself into the network. She downloaded the schematics while she tried to use the base's cameras to locate the entrance the creatures were likely to use to get in the building. Once she determined that, she tried to lock down the doors to the exterior of the building to keep the monstrosities out, or at least slow them down. She left an open path out of the building on the opposite side for them to escape through.

“Welp,” Joshua said as he walked over to the explosives laden cart, “Let’s hope we don’t run into any sharks. But just in case,” he continued, pulling out a ready-made explosive charge, “I’ll take one of these and shove it down its throat. By the way, thanks for taking care of these earlier, John.”

As he waited for the specialists to do their jobs, he set up a defensive position, standing to one side of the door leading into the main computer and keeping watch on the approach, prosthetic tail waving back and forth in anticipation.

Considering the experimental nature of the system that our GM Edto is trying out, I'm going to post using the more 'minimalist' way to provide an example for the future.

  • Hilda orientates herself towards the sound of the monster noises
  • Hilda provides rear overwatch, expecting guards or monsters
  • Hilda covers the hacker the most
"OH, OH!" Hilda excitedly bounced on her feet. "A Siortalun? I read about those on the tourism brochures! It's part mega-armadillo and part land-shark the size of a car or a truck!" Hilda explained. "But don't worry, even though it can burrow through the ground, I'll make sure to buy you all as much time as possible!" she tried to reassure them all. "They'll eventually catch me and tear me to pieces, but I'll definitely be able to buy you all enough time!"

"Amerikantsy govoryat, chto my sumasshedshiye," Tatiana muttered, walking over to one of the terminals and plugging herself in as Joshua and Hilda move to cover the team. " Vozmozhno, oni pravy, ya, dolzhno byt', soshel s uma, chtoby prinyat' etu rabotu," She added as she started pulling all the information she could off the computers, ignoring the screaming siortalun.

John, however, was all to focused on what it was, looking down the halls as Cleo informed them all it was inside the base. "Uh... What's a Siortalun?" He asked, looking to Joshua for some kind of answer.

"OH! Oh oh!" Hilda shouted before Joshua could get a word out. "I know that they are! I read about them in the tourism brochures before coming down!" She said, clearing her throat. "A Siortalun is a large, carnivorous armadillo like creature, typically the size of a truck!" She said, her voice full of passion. "They can burrow under the ground, and rip you limb from limb as if you were made of tissue!" She sighed happily.

Joshua shook his head, before looking back at John. "What she said, they're basically land sharks. Let's hope we don't run into any of them on our way out," He said, turning his attention to Tatiana. "Hey! How's pulling the schematics and the research the Boss asked for?"

"It's coming," Tatiana said, not turning away from her work.

Hilda still seemed caught in her day dream, before turning to Joshua. "Don't worry if the Siortalun catch up. I'll buy you all as much time as possible," She said, squeezing her knees together as who knows what kind of thoughts flashed through her head. "Even though they'll eventually catch me, and rip me to shreds, swallowing my flesh like I was some kind of helpless animal, I will buy you all enough time," Hilda stammered on, just on the cusp of a swoon.

John was in the middle of placing down his explosives, but he stopped to stare at Hilda as fantasies flashed across her eyes. "Dude... What the fuck is wrong with her?" He asked Joshua, shaking his head as he went back to making sure once the timers went off, the main computer room would be nothing but scrap metal.

"She has a condition," Joshua waved off, looking down the hallway. "But, if we do run into one of these things, rather than waste Hilda's life, we'll toss one of these into it's mouth," Joshua explained, reaching into the cart and pulling out one of the explosives.

John frowned at the mention of the explosives. "Right, about those," He said, holding one up. "So, I made a little mistake..." He continued, drawing a sigh out of Joshua. "I was supposed to use the remote detonators, that I could pair to a detonator switch, but I was in a rush and grabbed my box of timed detonators, so we really need a good escape plan."

That was When Tatiana stood up. "Don't worry," She said, flicking something across her tablet, a minimap appearing on everyone's hud. "I got the schematics, and easiest route to freedom. Set explosives, then we run," She shrugged, drawing her own pistol.

Before the group could say anything else, there was a metallic bang, and Hilda was thrown to her feet with a moan that made everyone else uncomfortable. What threw her wasn't very hard to figure out, as the metal floor had buckled up right underneath her. Everyone froze, looking at the spot. There was another bang, and the metal actually split. "John..." Joshua said. "Get those explosives set no-"

He couldn't finish what he said before the floor was ripped open like a tin can, and a massive creature started crawling out of the floor, the metal giving way to it where it was too thick to pass through. It was a Siortalun, and it had chosen here due to the immense heat the servers let off. It's head moved around slowly, and it took several long breaths through its large nose, it's tongue tracing over it's bloodstained muzzle and teeth. Then it seemed to look directly at John, a couple grunts escaping it's throat, before it screamed, and started it's charge.

“John, run to the side. Hilda, open fire!” Joshua yelled, leveling his assault rifle at the Siortalun and pulling the trigger. He was slightly surprised by the relative lack of recoil, which sent the end of the first burst into the floor, but readjusted and fired another burst into the land shark’s side. “Hey ugly, get your sorry ass over here,” he said, hoping to get the animal to turn around and focus on him.

  • Assuming that the shark turns around, Joshua’s going to stand in front of the doorway, set the timer on the explosive charge to 5 seconds or whatever the smallest time it can be set at, and get ready to throw it.

  • John's instinct is to flea from the danger
    • Yelling at the top of his lungs " I almost Fucking died... Those things are terrifying." (If surviving the attack)
    • (if taking damage) "What did i do to deserve this! My ( body part this) hurts like a mouse trap!"
  • Like Joshua warned one might need to be prepped to stop it; but instead I attempt to locate Hilda and attempt to get to her wherever she is lying.
    • "come on Hilda your the only one crazy enough to kill these things!"
  • John attempts to gain Tatiana's attention.
    • (if successful) "Could they help us in destroying the main computer we can blow them up and the facility."
    • (if not) John screams frantically at Tatiana to do something

Tatiana looked at her pistol and then the big monster, realizing her bullets weren't going to do much. She could only hope Joshua and the rest of the group could handle the thing. "Chto ya dolzhen delat'? Eto tvoya rabota tupitsa! Not my job, human." Tatiana said, throwing her hands up in the air in exasperation.

Her only remaining option was to activate the defense turrets inside the building. She sighed, put her gun away and turned back to her table. Typing in a frenzy, she tried to get the defense turrets online, and modify the system's targeting parameters to identify every living thing but them as enemies.

  • Hilda had fallen on her back and was looking at the creature from down between her legs
  • Hilda gets spurred into action by people yelling at her
  • Hilda does a triple backflip from the floor and gets back to the rest of the group
  • Hilda fires at its knees
"I'm sorry, it looked so angry and hungry at the same time!" she apologized. "I thought it was gonna eat me up!"

"DO SOMETHING!" John streamed, diving out of the way of the monster as quickly as he could as it slammed headfirst into a serverbank, ripping it out of the floor. Joshua opened fire, giving John the time it took for him to crawl away from the Siortalun, getting over to Hilda.

"It's gonna eat me..." Hilda said, her voice this strange mix of scared and aroused as she pushed herself up to get a better look. "Do you guys think it might eat me?"

John groaned, rolling his eyes as her wrapped his arms under hers and picked her up. "Lady, you have some serious problems, but right now we need you to help us try to kill this thing! Tatiana! Can you please help me try to blow this server room up!" He added, looking around the room.

"Chto ya dolzhen delat?" Tatiana screamed back, packing her computer back into it's bag and backing as far away from the Siortalun as she could. "Eto tvoya rabota tupitsa! It's you're job, not mine human! Figure it out!" She snapped, moving to another computer and pulling, frantically typing while keeping a side eye on the creature.

"John, Hilda, move left," Joshua shouted, slapping a fresh magazine into the gyro-rifle and continuing to open fire on the creature trying to get it's bearings. He may as well have been shooting a metal wall with all the good it was doing, but thankfully Hilda started shooting at the thing as it started to turn. "Hey fucker!" Joshua shouted, shooting it in the eyes a few times, making it scream. "I'm right the fuck over here!" He added, walking out the door and back into the hall, continuing to shoot. "Come and fucking get me!"

It charged, and Joshua jumped out of the way, making it run head first into the wall adjacent to the server room door with a squeal, getting up and swinging it's head around. "Keep setting the explosives! I've got this!" He yelled, just as the turrets in the ceiling dropped down and started shooting at the Siortalun, making it scream even more, and yet still no significant damage.

John took the order to heart, immediately starting to set the explosive as fat as he could manage as Hilda watched, looking around at everyone. "Why do you guys get all the cool jobs!" She whined, stomping her feet, approaching Joshua to try and help. The glare he gave her, however, was enough to stay her feet, not because she was concerned, but because she was trying not to swoon at how forceful a simple look was.

Then John set the last explosive, running into the hall and tossing it to Joshua. "Get it in it's mouth!" He yelled as Joshua caught the charge, still keeping his eyes on the Siortalun, waiting for the perfect opportunity. It came, the creature screeching at Joshua in frustration and charging. Joshua back pedaled down the hall and side stepped just as it opened it's mouth to rip him in half, tossing the charge in it's mouth. He ran around the back of it, just as the charge went off, splattering the walls with blood and gore as it's head suddenly ceased to exist and the body fell to the ground along with Joshua, panting.

Tatiana walked into the hall, looking both ways. "The plans to the base have been downloaded, I have all the information, and the facility was built with a decontamination code that I put into motion for when these server banks are destroyed," She said, looking down at Joshua. "Khvatit spat' na rabote, chtoby my ne vse umerli," She added, starting to walk.

"We've got five minutes," John added, following out of the room just as quickly.

Hilda stood next to Joshua, looking at the now dead Siortalun with a longing look. "I didn't even get covered in gore... This is just a rip off," She whined, prodding the creature with a toe as Joshua got back up, shaking his head at the thanklessness of all of it.

"Hilda..." He sighed, grabbing her and pulling her along. "You've got some issues, but this is not the time for them," He said, getting her walking before letting her go again.

  • Joshua lets whoever has the map info guide the group to whatever exit is either closest or fastest to get to.
  • He takes point as the group runs to their exit point, making sure to kill any security guards or whoever points a gun at the group.
  • If there's time, he starts 'googling' to figure out what Tatiana is saying.

The snow elf muttered, "Etot samoubiystvennyy pridurok stanet prichinoy nashey smerti."
  • Tatiana guides everyone to the nearby exit, providing backup for the others with her handgun when necessary.
  • She stayed behind Hilda and Joshua, but in front of John, in case someone attacked from the rear.

  • "What are we gonna do about the guards that are still outside?'
  • Decontamination mode. He looks towards Tatiana. "Like incinerate everything inside! Let's hurry then."
  • Without a weapon he follows closely the others.

"D-decontamination mode?" Hilda sputtered, following the others out. "But what about the Chongwu here? Or even the magical people that are being experimented on?" she began with disbelief. Looking at Tatiana, the woman asked, "Aren't you worried if there's other elves here? They'll be killed too!" she pointed out, realizing that there likely was nothing to be done. "I-I can't even try and help them?" Hilda asked herself more than anything.
