The Kongjian/空劍/Void Swords are an elite unit in the Republic Space Command. The exact number of Kongjian units across the entirety of HFR space is unknown, ranging between 100-200 units in Shen Zhou and Sol, half that number in Li Ming. They are trained and modified extensively to fight in the space environment with ease, drilled to improvise on hostile spacecraft and space stations with limited or no support. Specifically, the Kongjian are a response to Daqin biotechnological superiority.

Recruitment

Kongjian candidates are drawn from the individual confederate member-state special forces, instead of the GKF space marines. While GKF Space Marine candidates have more experience with space operations in general, special forces from member-states are of superior quality in every aspect except for spaceborne adaptations, which is see as an easier task to correct for by the GKF. Recruiters come to individual candidates, rather than accepting volunteers. Psychological analysis is conducted to verify the candidate's ability to stay calm in isolation and near-death scenarios.

Training

Once candidates are chosen, they are transferred to Kongjian bases in their home systems, where they are first given training in operation in zero-to-low-gravity and vacuum environments for six months, then sent out in deep space in individual skiffs to conduct survival missions for three, month-long periods with three-month recovery periods in between. Retention rate is high, given the candidates' chosen nature and their prior experience, with only a 20% attrition rate after this first stage of training.

After the candidate passes the first stage of training, they are assigned to teams of four as pre-deployment units. Candidates with especial philanthropic traits are sent to Shen Zhou, where they gather is mixed member-state teams as expeditionary forces. Upon assignment, Kongjian personnel are granted biological adaptations that increase their body mass, reflexes, and survivability in hostile environments and injured conditions. They are also given cybernetic implantations that uplink with their Tengkong-Class Intra-Vehicular Assault Suits (IVAS). Training with these augmentations takes another year, with special emphasis on hand-to-hand combat.

Known Teams and Deployment

Kongjian teams are spread across key GKF military installations and flagship cruisers. Dedicated marine battlegroups will have two or three teams of Kongjian units.
