Fioda av Maridan
“They said that revenge was not sweet, that it was bloody. They were wrong. It *was* sweet. For one fleeting, glorious moment I felt incredible satisfaction. Then it was gone, empty, and I had to go on living.”
Fioda av Meridan (hereafter referred to as 'Fia') is an Aos Si agent working primarily for 'The Black House', sometimes 'The Empty House' - Tel'cerlyn Kor, a traditionalist Aos Si shadow organization working to empower and liberate her people. Whether she is fully committed to this cause, or simply latched onto it to get an education and a better start in life, is up for debate. Her full name refers to a place long-defunct and which was destroyed during the initial colonization rush by the Chinese and never goes by her original family name. One might consider that they, too, are long-defunct. When necessary she is referred to by an 'integration' Chinese surname. For instance, she would professionally be referred to as 'Lieutenant Mao' but would traditionally be Fioda of Maridan.
In public life, she presently works for New Age Technologies.
Personality
Much like her chosen surname, Fia has a cat's grace and a cat's attitude on life; she's social when she wants to be but there's no telling when, or if, she's going to scratch someone. Her better mental qualities are her wit and sharp intelligence, and an uncanny ability to read people after speaking to them for a little while; sometimes, even after just glancing at them. At the same time, she tends to suffer from bouts of anhedonia, though she's rarely angry. Mercurial, she can be secretive and coy, yet remarkably open and apparently honest when the mood strikes her. If she ever gets angry, she does so somewhere that people cannot see her - or where they don't see her coming.
In love or acts of the heart, she tends to be liberal, remarkably sensual, and very touch-based. The people she is most close to, friends or lovers, tend to benefit from her actual physical presence both in public and in private. She is not shy about her body, which is partly her nature and partly the result of martial training undergone during her time in the Kor. Either abuse doesn't occur to her, or she's confident enough that her hundred-twenty-some-odd pounds is enough to do serious harm to anyone who might actually try.
Most of the time people find her to be pleasant company, but every once in a while she gets a far-off look and it’s difficult not to wonder whether she’s really into it, or just pretending to be. There’s a hidden edge to her that some people can sense instinctively.
Appearance
Although one doesn't have to be dark-skinned to be considered a 'Dark' Aos Si, Fia's most distinguishing feature is her coloration. Bright, gold-blonde hair with a hint of reddish copper over dark, coffee-colored skin. A pair of molten gold eyes round it out and make her, while not unique, quite stunning.
- Build: Athletic, hourglass. Most of her muscle rests in her legs, but her shoulders carry some of it. She is, more or less, the poster child for 'hot alien chick', with a side-order of acrobat.
- Facial Features: Small, upturned nose; narrow chin, high cheekbones. Although her nose is a slight bit crooked from a meeting with someone's fist, it's barely noticeable.
- Hair Style: She typically keeps her hair long. When working, she binds it up in a ponytail. Unbound, it is about mid-back. It is a little wavy and tends to frizz in certain humidities.
- Distinguishing Features: Black circle tattoo, left upper breast. Very gold eyes, unusually sharp.
History
The Aos Si consider child-birth to be both a cause for celebration and an ill omen - because fertility among the Aos Si most often heralds a disaster.
Her parents died in the original push, leaving her orphaned in a world that rapidly changed. The slaughter continued wholesale from the moment the beast-men came and it seemed nowhere could be safe. The resistance stole it's weapons, but didn't know much about their use. The most that could often be done was flee further and further from where the colonists made their homes. By the time their conquerors decided to allow them to return, Fia was a hard and desperate young woman, and though the indignity burned she went back to try to live in the world the humans had carved out of her old one.
Fia had spent most of her youth knowing only one thing: Survive. When she and her few fellows were accepted into society again they were split up and Fia landed in a bad situation, a part of her history she buries as a footnote to her membership in the Black House. Having little else to trade but youth and suddenly-popular Aos Si beauty, she took 'modeling' jobs and other, less savory work; in the beginning, there were not a lot of ways to integrate into the naturally xenophobic mass of humanity except to appeal to their sense of the exotic. It was during one of her worst years that Tel'cerlyn Kor scouted her for a job involving a senator, two other callgirls, an actual tiger, an obscene amount of synthetic butter, and a very valuable thumb drive. She became involved in blackmail, drug trafficking, and a number of other cons or subterfuge. It gave her life more meaning and she began to enjoy the challenge.
Be patient, they told her, and we can win everything back. Fia took the tattoo and traded in her lingerie-or-less life for a suit, a tie, a nice car, and an apartment on a high-rise in the middle of human civilization.
They decided that she had a suitable temperament for more complicated work than simple theft and arranged for her and several of her contemporaries to be privately tutored. They were taught martial arts, given a technological education, and then further trained as their talents happened to lie. As it turned out, Fia had an eye for people that made her a very observant enforcer-type, and a surprising talent for computers and networking, so documents were forged, names were made up, places and times were fudged until Fia looked like a model of democratic working-class idealism. She spent fifteen years working as a lower-rung programmer for Sohei Computing, served twenty years in a municipal police department, and eventually broke off to rise in the ranks of a private security firm that she still works for today. All of her clearances are in order and she is a trustworthy, dependable individual.
It’s probably all true, too, at least in part - because if she’s pressed on it, she can demonstrate skills from all of those supposed prior jobs.
Skills
A long-lived Aos Si sometimes chooses a specialty, but Fia has made herself a generalist with a wide range of discarded half-interests and talents.
- She has a talent for and basic understanding of most modern programming languages. She is particularly keen on embedding identity-theft viruses in porn network links, perhaps out of spite.
- Martial arts. She was taught a form of Hung Ga kung-fu mixed with more traditional Aos Si weapon arts, the name of which is 'Kan Ga'. Many of the basic unarmed stances remain the same as their Chinese counterparts.
- Notably, she prefers a baton and handgun.
- She has advanced knowledge of most conventional security and weapons systems, installed on most civilian craft.
- She underwent a brief flirtation in her youth with botany and the natural sciences, having been forced into the position where not knowing might have gotten her killed.
- Acting. Also, acting. Don't play her in poker.
Traits
Traits are more or less some noteworthy aspects of your character. Are they brave? Are they cowardly? Is this person creative or dumb? Maybe they're very pretty, or completely distracting?
- Canny. She has a sharp and observant mind and a quick wit.
- Pretty. She's an Aos Si with fairly unique and attractive coloration.
- Unnerving. Most people sense there's something a little off with her.
- Irreverant. Despite her oft-professional appearance, she can be remarkably unconcerned with professionalism.

Notes
- Fia is the spiritual successor to Bhelith/Morioka, a former character of mine. CadetNewb was insistent I reprise her, so I kept the same appearance and demeanor but rewrote the chocolate elf with a different history.
- The name 'Fioda' is derived from 'Flidais', a female figure in Irish Mythology, known by the epithet Foltchaín ("beautiful hair"). Historians now conclude she was a goddess of cattle and fertility, but she used to be thought of as the Irish 'Artemis' figure, a huntress, which is how I learned of her.
- The 'Empty House' noted here is strongly inspired by Japanese Yakuza. Just with more elves.
