• Nobles of Null is a forum based roleplay site where sci-fi and magic collide. Here, Earth remains fractured and divided despite humanity reaching out to the stars. Worse still, the trans-human slaves of one major power have escaped, only to establish their own Empire, seething with resentment at abuses of the past. Even the discovery of aliens, though medieval in development, has failed to rally these squabbling children of Earth together with its far darker implications. Worse still, is the discovery of the impossible - magic. Practiced by the alien locals, nearly depleted and therefore rare, its reality warping abilities remains abstract and distant to the general populace. All the while, unseen in the darkness of space, forces from without threaten to press in. For those with eyes opened by insight, it is clear that an era is about to end, and that a new age will dawn.

  • Large MBT with a four person crew: Captain, driver, loader, gunner. Loader serves as an additional person for redundancy and hand for maintenance.
  • Features a nuclear fission engine, a main coilgun, and a point-defense laser
  • Landing pad for a hover drone wingman for scouting
  • Advanced comms to connect to two companion Tiexie 铁蝎 Class Unmanned Armored Fighting Vehicles (UAFV); captain is cybernetically modified with neural implants.
  • Design varies from planet to planet and geography.

  • Name references a mother scropion and her young.

The Four Crew MBT

I think there is a good case to be made for less people in an MBT, mostly because any extra crew can just be put in another vehicle. Though maybe you want to minimize support vehicles or keep the crew more together for cohesion's sake? You may even go just a bit bigger with the tank and make the interior space a lot more comfortable with the intention of the crew remaining in and basically living in the tank for long duration? I don't think you need to go as big as that tank from Star Citizen, but a few steps in that direction might not be terrible / make for good fluff about the vehicle.

Nuclear Fission Engine

Is this crazy? I know there have been some advancements in small nukes but I'd think that putting the nuclear material in the thing being shot at might be going a bit too far? Or perhaps the dangers of radiation release are countered by the existence of anti-radiation meds? Also if fusion tech is available wouldn't you prefer to use that since the fuel isn't dangerous if it gets released?

Also I have been wondering about just how the various nuclear engines in a tank like this might work. I imagine they'd be like Hybrid cars where the reactor feeds a power bank of some kind. The reactor itself probably can't power the whole tank when its going at full speed and firing all its guns but at the same time it probably doesn't really need to since you won't be at 100% for very long.

Hoverdrones

I could see it carrying a few small quadcopters because those are just so incredibly light weight. There's also a benefit to keeping the drones with the tank because its easier to use something when its 'yours' instead of having to request it from some second vehicle.

At the same time, I do think you might as well make a drone-carrier version of the vehicle. Use the same parts to make it easy to maintain and just carry all the spare drones + have a dedicated drone operation crew.

Differing designs for each planet

Why not just make these differently named designs? Or like different designs that may share components? I would think that the differences between planets and their local industrial facilities would be great enough to warrant that.

The Four Crew MBT

Crew redundancy is generally preferred, especially for such a large, important asset that's not just an MBT, but also a command tank that dictates unmanned vehicles.

Nuclear Fission Engine

A fission engine is likely to work better in a relatively small vehicle. Though, this thing could also just be chemically powered.

Differing designs for each planet

This is specifically an HFR thing to keep the confederacy together. The tyranny of distance makes for a fragile superstate that can break apart easily. The three system-states aren't reliant on each other for resources (they have no choice), and common cultural heritage is not a pragmatic sell, so the main way the superstate maintains cohesion is by forcing military dependence by combining their military R&D efforts. Hence, while each planet may have a variant, it's all the same MBT due to political necessities.

F-35 mentality goes brrr.
