The XUG-21 uses specialty ammo designed to defeat heavily armored infantry and light armored vehicles. Being 40 mm shaped charge grenades, they at first used a ring shaped optical sensor around the front of the round to track the distance to their target, through tracking the infared laser by the weapon's attached illuminator. Once at a preset distance, the explosive triggers, melting the copper cone and launching it at the target.
