• Nobles of Null is a forum based roleplay site where sci-fi and magic collide. Here, Earth remains fractured and divided despite humanity reaching out to the stars. Worse still, the trans-human slaves of one major power have escaped, only to establish their own Empire, seething with resentment at abuses of the past. Even the discovery of aliens, though medieval in development, has failed to rally these squabbling children of Earth together with its far darker implications. Worse still, is the discovery of the impossible - magic. Practiced by the alien locals, nearly depleted and therefore rare, its reality warping abilities remains abstract and distant to the general populace. All the while, unseen in the darkness of space, forces from without threaten to press in. For those with eyes opened by insight, it is clear that an era is about to end, and that a new age will dawn.

Site Constitution and Player Agreement

Mission Statement

To provide a science-fantasy role-playing platform and coordinate efforts of game-masters to build a cohesive narrative in one shared-setting.

Vision Statement

We want to build a community that inspires its members through the power of fiction and create a positive and enjoyable environment.

Leadership Structure

Admins
The site is helmed by two admins and an admin elect. The site manager, the setting manager, and the Player Representative who is elected by the user base and acts as an alternative segway between the administration and users. The Player Representative has full administrative authority alongside the site and setting managers. Their duties are as follows:

  • Site Manager: Ensures that the site, composed of the forums and wiki, is fully operational in addition to managing the finances
  • Setting Manager: Ensures the creation of content and its quality for the setting, which is to be documented on the wiki and used in roleplay on the forum
  • Player Representative: Interacts with the player base directly, communicating their thoughts, complaints, and wants/desires to the rest of the admins, serving as their advocate and ensuring the community voice is considered in discussion.

Moderators
Moderators handle low level affairs on the website and in the Discord server. However, certain moderators will also function as public defenders dedicated to defending players who are caught in more serious conflicts, equipped with full knowledge of the rules.

Game Masters (GM’s)
Besides the Player Representative who is directly chosen by the community to represent it in the leadership, GM’s also indirectly act as representatives. This is done through monthly community meetings as the leadership and GM’s gather together to discuss status and future of plots, and report player feedback and other concerns.

Setting and Plot Expectations

Something about approval process, coordination, etc.

Core Tenants (adopted from The Iron Laws by Bullroar)

These are the laws that govern how we interact both within the unit as well as how we treat those outside the unit.

- Respect the chain of leadership.
- Follow the Golden Rule: Treat others how you wish to be treated - with respect and dignity.
- We do not condone our members speaking down to other groups. While we may discuss their weaknesses, openly disrespecting others will only make us look arrogant.
- No sexism, no racism, and no bigotry. We are mature, honorable, respectful human beings and we like to maintain a mature environment.
- We win respect with our actions, not our words.
- Use discretion when resolving disagreements. Attempt to resolve matters peacefully, with respect and dignity.
- You are expected to follow all mentioned codes, protocols, and restrictions written in our doctrine, or instructed to you by leadership word of mouth.
- You are expected to take all documents you have signed seriously and follow them to the letter.

Adding, Removing, or Amending Rules

Inevitably, problems arise that require the leadership to either modify existing rules, add rules, or remove them entirely. In all three of these cases, the leadership first discusses among itself whether or not a problem warrants action on the rules itself. Afterwards, several possible paths forward are proposed, then sent out to the community for discussion. Depending on the severity of the situation, one or more days are allotted for public debate of the issue. Finally, once a consensus by two-thirds majority is reached, action is implemented, otherwise the status quo is maintained. Besides the initial debate amongst the leadership, everything else about the process should be open to the public.

Dealing with Wrongdoings

The goal here is to establish the power limitations on the leadership and to prevent application of excessive punishment. When a player is witnessed or accused of breaking site or legal rules, one of two possible actions are taken.

Minor
The first is Minor, which includes actions that a moderator or admin can make without consulting the rest of the leadership. Minor actions are in response to minor offenses. They include the following:
  • Temporarily muting the offender for no more than 24 hours.
  • Temporarily moving the offender in a “jail cell” channel, in which they can only talk to the leadership, for no more than 24 hours.
  • Temporarily slowing down the speed of an entire text chat, or muting it entirely, for no more than 6 hours.

Major
The second is Major, which requires a more elaborate process before action is taken, and is reserved for more serious wrongdoings, the aftermath more severe as well. First, an accusation must be made and the accuser is known to the defendant. Then, the leadership consults the defendant, giving them options for a mod as a public defender, and the choice of a public or private trial. The trial itself is an exchange of evidence and allows the defendant to make their case. The trial is only considered valid if all of the following criteria are met:
  • The date and time of the trial was scheduled after consulting the defendant.
  • The trial was attended and witnessed by the Player Representative.
  • The trial’s exchanges were recorded either through text chat screenshots, voice recording software, or other methods.
After the trial, the leadership discusses what action to take. An action can only be taken if it is agreed upon by a simple majority of the leadership. Major actions include the following:
  • Indefinite duration extensions of the Dread actions.
  • Banning the defendant from the discord server.
  • Removal of wiki editing permissions.
  • Removal of forum posting permissions.

For due process, from informing the defendant that they’ve been accused, to the final decision making, a minimum of 72 hours must pass.

Regarding rule changes

When any staff member sees a problem, if they think a rule should be made, they need to explain why the rule needs to be offered.

This is an inherent problem we have not addressed yet, that is liable to become a problem soon. This is why.

I heard X player/s make a complaint

This problem was formally submitted by a player/players through official Channels.

Once that is done, the staff discuss if it is actually a problem. If it's a problem, is it a problem that is having a negative substantial impact on the website or community at large. Can the problem realistically be solved by the staff. Is it a fundamental moral issue, or is it an individual mora issue based on a sociopolitical motivator. Other such questions.

If the staff can agree that the problem does warrant action, then we begin brainstorming possible solutions. Working out how it will be implemented, will it only affect the problem, or is there a way it can affect other things that are not a problem. How will we nullify the effects to those things that are not the problem. Can we enforce this rule consistently without relying too much on case by case basis handwaiving. Etc etc

Then, whatever solutions we come up with, we put to a vote. Once we present it to the community, it should be a complete rule the staff agree can be implemented should the website agree to implement it. It should have an explanation as to what exactly it will affect, how it will affect it, and the noticeable pros and cons of putting it into effect. Votes will be "Yes, we implement this rule, no we do not implement this rule."

If there are multiple rule options, we of course, add as many options to the poll as necessary to cover all options to the website.
