• Nobles of Null is a forum based roleplay site where sci-fi and magic collide. Here, Earth remains fractured and divided despite humanity reaching out to the stars. Worse still, the trans-human slaves of one major power have escaped, only to establish their own Empire, seething with resentment at abuses of the past. Even the discovery of aliens, though medieval in development, has failed to rally these squabbling children of Earth together with its far darker implications. Worse still, is the discovery of the impossible - magic. Practiced by the alien locals, nearly depleted and therefore rare, its reality warping abilities remains abstract and distant to the general populace. All the while, unseen in the darkness of space, forces from without threaten to press in. For those with eyes opened by insight, it is clear that an era is about to end, and that a new age will dawn.

Chapter 2: The Ruins Are Alive

"Our infantry and Soviet forces were sent to the structure and it has the highest likelihood of other suvivors holing up. If there are allies in our vicinity, that's it. Ideal? No, but with coms to the fleet down, the sun starting to set, and more importantly our ammo reserves approaching dry...

Chapter 2: The Ruins Are Alive

"Look, the whole city is totaled, we're running out bullets, and the only place with potential resupply is a likely ambush. The only way to make things right is start making some wrongs. Get busy." Jugen did not pretend to be a tech-head beyond armor maintenance but he hoped that sacrificing an...

Chapter 2: The Ruins Are Alive

"Any non tech-heads, eyes on the streets and the skies. We made enough noise as it is." With that in mind, Jurgen's hands began to turn and flip the machine over, looking for anything that might look like it could have a cable stuck into it. "Worse comes to worst, we can probably pull this thing...

Chapter 2: The Ruins Are Alive

Gunfire rang inside the house as the limbs and heads of the creatures dug into holes and shoved themselves through slanting windows. A few managed to pull themselves only for assault rifle rounds to slam into their bodies, splattering the surfaces with guts, cuticle, and innards. If there was a...

Chapter 2: The Ruins Are Alive

The reaction times on the skittering grubs was either nightmarish or impressive. Their bodies did not look like something that should move that fast even if they were not particularly large but they moved almost as if they anticipated where bullets might fire. That or they were just so jittery...

Chapter 2: The Ruins Are Alive

"I need every gun I can get alive especially seeing as we're outnumbered." He all but snarled at Korofi, the security guard's big mouth trying his patience with every mishap. "Especially since we're using up more ammo and we have no guarantee of resupply. Conserve those shots before I have...

Chapter 2: The Ruins Are Alive

With trained efficiency the building was swept with anxious, eager, scared weapons sweeping every corner for the faintest trace of the unidentified and vicious threat. The structure hadn't been punished by the same ravages as the rest of the city; it was stable and standing. Most of the...

The limbs of the vrexul splayed outwards, each one with too many joints and too much individuality as they instinctively clasped and scraped at the surface. In this weightless environment they looked less like warmachines and more like some sort of rock-mimicking ambush predators. The fact that...

"AN UNDERSTANDABLE COURSE OF ACTION. WE WILL CONTACT YOU IN DUE TIME." The sphere-entity remained but immediately, the huge vrexul that had accompanied crept forth. Initially it was as if the were sliding across the ground but with their extended abdomens spread over the ground they stood upon...

"In my culture, we lower our forms to such a degree when we wish to hide or to strike." The voice did not come out of the sphere. It was synthetic and clearly not whatever it is these things sounded like, not coming from the mouth of the one who spoke it but buzzing speakers. They seemed to be...

"THAT IS THE OTHER REASON FOR THE TWO YOU SEE BEFORE YOU. THE VESSEL WITH WHICH YOU SPEAK IS NOT VREXUL: MERELY A MECHANISM OF INTERNAL LEADERSHIP. IT CANNOT INFORM YOU OF VREXUL SOCIAL AND IDEOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS IN A MEANINGFUL WAY BEYOND ROTE REGURGITATION OF INFORMATION BEREFT. IF YOU...

A sound like a shriek, bestial in nature, broke the ambience of gunfire as from two of the vrexul feeds hidden in cover, autocannon-rifles sounded off. The hill which held the heavy weapons team was illuminated by bursts of orange-red flame, a supporting gun turret's feed mounted on a nearby...

Chapter 2: The Ruins Are Alive

"I meant it when I said shut the fuck up Korofi." He growled as he swung over to the building, visor darkening and colour-shifting as he scanned for any potential threats before shoving the door open, LMG sweeping and squad filing into the structure. It didn't look any more or less decrepit...

The doors of the vessel opened and the cavernous innards of the alien vessel revealed themselves to the visitors. A white mist wafted out, enveloping their sight but silhouetted through the fading fog was a structure eerily naturalistic. It was not merely a cave that winded out into expansive...

"WHAT WAS TAKEN NOW RETURNED." From behind the miasma veil, a familiar shape shot out like a fish breaking a pool's surface. The automata that had been investigating 138 spun outwards trailing thread-like attachments like seaborne weeds or kelp against their body. Foreign biomechanical mass...

The ships themselves held dead still with only the living fog and object 138 visible, quickly vanishing behind it along with the drone and any data feed it could provide. As their line to their drones went dead, the squirming shroud-covered one pinged back in staccato bursts as if mimicking...

Roughly four days had passed and the interior of 138 remained quiet and inert save for the same marginal activity keeping it functional. Anytime the hole was opened, the swarms reemerged to close it shut and the long-beetle creatures slithered away into the low gravity internal fluid pool. It...
