As the grand designs of the Machine Doctor were in play, the ship in the midst of reconstruction, he was already working on playing a small bit of politics. It turns out that Geiben’s stint as the PR guy was far from over, though this particular mission sounded, at least from the report given to him by KB-120, far less potentially deadly. At the very least the venue was far more aesthetically pleasing. The report gave him the contact info of one Alymande Sphenta, and a place to find her on Hawking. Said to be the head of the most recent Chongwu freedom group, KB told him this would provide them with a plentiful selection of rather miffed genetically created animal people, ripe for combat in many ways against the Daqin. The Captain was on a shuttle now, touching down on Hawking.
Geiben landed in New Cambridge, stepping out and automatically boarded a shuttle that brought him the closest to this Sphenta’s location. Chongwu freedom group. The captain mused on memories with mixed feelings. Last time he talked to someone of those splinter groups things got intimate. He smirked to himself, then shrugged it off. This was a business trip, despite the coincidences.
On the path forward he could feel eyes on him, hidden eyes watching him. Hidden, until after a while he stood before an okay establishment, a bar. Discrete but enjoyable. The same eyes on his back were gone. Stepping in, his eyes moved around to find the right table as instructed by Dr. Knowledgebot. Sitting there was a nervous individual, a golden furred cat woman that was fiddling with her outfit that bordered on nice but didn’t quite reach it. Her eyes met him, and she froze for a split second, before very quickly cleaning the table before her. She smiled at him, pointing at the other seat across from her.
The captain was dressed in civilian clothes, the most notable items on him being his datapad and a pen with a false gold clip slid into his left shirt pocket, as instructed by the doctor. He smiled back and sat down. He tapped his datapad to order a fizzy drink, looking at the stranger. “Anything you’d like?” Was his opening greeting.
She smiled, looking around nervously before looking at him. “You’re too kind,” she said, clearing her throat to help it out. Finally, she sounded more sure of herself. “I’m not one to look a gift Captain in the mouth, I’ll have something fizzy. Can’t get too tipsy on a diplomatic mission right?” She said with a giggle.
“Of course.” Geiben nodded. Soon enough, the drinks arrived, delivered from a student waiter. He took a sip, before remarking, “So… Ms. Sphenta, is it?”
“Yes,” she replied with a smile. “Alymande Sphenta, a last name I made up and stuck with.” She gave a thankful nod to the waiter, and lightly sipped her drink, smiling. “And you’re the infamous Captain Geiben, Captain of justice or something.” She leaned closer, looking around. “I admit, I’m happy to meet you in person. I’m better at talking in person honestly, and you seemed like someone that deserved an in-person rendezvous. The freed ones are a little iffy on you. Some don’t trust humans as far as they can throw them, others are looking forward to working with you.” She sighed, rolling her eyes. “So, like the rest of humanity then.”
“That’s par for the course.” Geiben sighed and nodded. “We’re all animals. I don’t expect too much difference from your uplifted kind. We all run on the base instincts. So… what can I do for you? The Magnetic Assembly can always use more manpower, and I expect you need resources.”
“Oh don’t be so business, Captain,” she chided with a smile. “Space is big, and you spent a long time getting here. Let’s not talk too quickly, we have the time.” She sighed, sipping again, licking her lips. “The deal goes something like this, as suggested by Tall, Dark, and Metal. A lot of people, my people, are very willing to fight the Daqin when the time comes. You know, the mental brainwashing and slavery, it leaves a bit of a bad taste. So, while you’re fighting the AU, we’re working on building ourselves up. If we’re done before the Doc has wiped the cosmos with humanity, then we’ll be able to help.”
